On the morning of February 25th, Nate Ohlman started his day just like any other. As he cruised down the road, delivering mail like he always did, he noticed something unusual – an old dog curled up in a ditch at the far end of a quiet dead-end street.
On a freezing day in the midst of a harsh Missouri winter, Ohlman noticed a shivering puppy desperately seeking warmth. The sight of the lonely pup in the chilly weather tugged at his heartstrings, prompting him to take action. Approaching the dog with care to avoid startling him, Ohlman soon realized that the old dog was hard of hearing and sight.
As soon as Ohlman laid eyes on the dog, whom he later named Sloan, he knew that they were meant to help each other. With Sloan in his arms, Ohlman drove to the nearest animal hospital, feeling concerned about the poor pup’s well-being. After quickly dropping off Sloan for medical attention, Ohlman left his contact details with the hospital staff, eager to receive updates on Sloan’s progress.
Ohlman went back to work, moving forward with determination, yet Sloan still lingered in his mind despite his efforts to push her away. All he could do was fervently pray for Sloan’s recovery, hoping that they would be reunited in the end.
Sloan found his way to the KC Pet Project after being rescued from the roadside, showing up at their shelter the very next day. He was in a sorry state, and the rescue team couldn’t help but feel heartbroken at the sight of him. Tori Fugate, the chief communications officer at KC Pet Project, revealed, “He was emaciated, covered in sores, and had difficulty standing or walking unaided for long periods. Our vets rated his condition as the worst possible.”
Once Sloan was saved, he was immediately started on medication and given plenty of fluids. His caretakers monitored him closely for days, worried that he was in bad shape. With top-notch care, Sloan started to improve and eventually moved to a foster home. There, he continued to thrive and make progress on his road to full recovery. At nearly 12 years old, Sloan transformed into a sweet, playful dog who simply adored being around people, soaking up all the love and attention he had missed out on for so long.
Sloan thrived in his foster home before finding his forever home. When the time came for him to be adopted, the folks at KC Pet Project reached out to Ohlman, who was ecstatic to welcome Sloan into his family. The reunion between Sloan and Ohlman was heartwarming, with Sloan showing his gratitude for being rescued with plenty of love and hugs. Sloan has adjusted well to his new surroundings and is living his best life in his new home.
